Waka-Sensei Mitsuteru Ueshiba

Waka-Sensei Mitsuteru Ueshiba is the great-grandson of Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba. He graduated from Toyo University in 2006 with a degree in law. In 2008 he was appointed Assistant Dojo-Cho of Hombu Dojo. He currently teaches Aikido at Hombu Dojo and a number of Japanese universities and frequently teaches at dojos around the world. Waka-Sensei first visited New Zealand in 2004 together with his father, Aikido Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba.

Seijuro Masuda Shihan – 8th Dan

Masuda Shihan was born in Tokyo and in 1962 started practicing under Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. He is a regular instructor at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo. Masuda Shihan first visited New Zealand to teach Aikido more than 20 years ago and he has been a regular and popular visitor every since. A keen golfer, he enjoys his time on the golf links almost as much as he enjoys teaching Aikido. Masuda Shihan, and his wife Ikuyo – herself a 2nd Dan Aikido practitioner - are well known in New Zealand.

Toshiharu Sawada Shihan – 7th Dan

Sawada Shihan and Takase Shihan were teenagers when they first met. As university students, they trained together under four renowned Shihans: Chiba, Kana, Ichihashi and Watanabe Shihans. Sawada Shihan is currently Dojo Cho of Kimoro Dojo in Nagoya and the Director of the Aichi-Ken Shubu, with a total membership of 480 Aikido practitioners. He has a particular interest in incorporating the movements of ken and jo into Aikido techniques.

Etsuji Horii Shihan – 7th Dan

Horii Shihan, is sometimes referred to as “Aioikai Shihan” in reference to the Aioikai Organization he founded in the Kansai region of Japan. Horii Shihan regularly teaches Aikido in dojos throughout Asia and Europe. He is the Director of the All Japan Aikido Federation and Chief Director of the Hyogo Prefecture Aikido Federation. Horii Shihan founded the Aikido Kobe-Sanda Dojo in 1996.

Tony Smibert Shihan – 7th Dan

Smibert Shihan started Aikido training in 1964 and has been a student of Sugano Shihan since that time. Smibert Shihan has played a key role in the evolution of Aikido in Australia. Currently the President of Aikikai Australia, he has also been its National Area Representative since 1978. Next to Sugano Shihan he is its senior instructor and is also a member of the Technical Teaching Committee. Smibert Shihan was Vice Chairman of the International Aikido Federation for many years and is now a member of its Senior Council.
